Ambassador of Mirth
Baton Bob, the character, was born out of my efforts to lift the spirits of the City of St. Louis in response to the 9/11 tragedy.
The character had started walking in Forest Park wearing exercise gear and twirling his baton - an activity learned during his childhood. He soon noticed how others were enjoying watching him (and his legs) - so he decided to bring even more fun, smiles and laughter to his fans by dressing appropriately for the season: reindeer antlers for the December holidays! Soon the costumes became more outrageous and even more fun to see, including the Easter bunny (in a pink tutu) the following Spring.
The first newspaper article ever written about the character was entitled "Ambassador Of Mirth!" The name was so fitting for the substance of the character that I chose to keep it as the official name. When the public learned my first name was Bob, they added "Baton", which created the signature "Baton Bob."
In 2004, after Baton Bob became legendary in the metropolitan St. Louis area, I decided to return to the city I had grown to love many years earlier - Atlanta. Since the character's arrival here, his notoriety and popularity has increased. Starting in the Midtown neighborhood and gradually moving through the downtown corridor, Baton Bob has absolutely captivated the city.
He has been featured in Atlanta Magazine as one of the city's top 50 personalities and has appeared in an ad campaign for the new Georgia Aquarium.
In June 2006, he appeared in "The Comedy of Errors" for the Georgia Shakespeare Festival by leading the parade of performers and entertaining the crowd before the show.
He appeared in the pilot episode of Laugh Out, a gay-themed comedy show and also has made a guest appearance in the play, "Peachtree Battle," to benefit Human Rights Campaign Atlanta.
Recently, he was featured on the CNN website in a seven-minute video produced by Eric Langford of TBS Story/Line.
Atlanta continues to embrace the character and Bob welcomes the numerous requests for appearances at many local celebratory events.
FYI: another passion of mine is floral design, and I have 15 years of work experience in custom floral architecture by providing floral arrangements for weddings, special occasions and holiday home decorating.
The Ambassador of Mirth will continue to pursue his mission of simply bringing smiles, laughter and cheer to the lives of Atlantans - and humankind!
P.S. Bob's dream is to one day appear on the Ellen Degeneres Show and march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. I want to surprise him one day when this becomes a reality!
Mirthfully,
Bob Jamerson
